Nancy J. Smyth is a Professor and former Dean (2004–2021) at the University at Buffalo School of Social Work. She holds roles as Associate Dean for Faculty Development and is an affiliated research scientist at the Research Institute on Addictions. Her expertise spans trauma-informed practice, substance abuse treatment, and integrating digital technologies into social work education and practice. She earned her PhD, MSW, and BA in Psychology from SUNY Albany.
Dr. Smyth’s leadership transformed UB’s MSW program into a top 10% nationally, emphasizing trauma and human rights frameworks. She co-founded the Buffalo Center for Social Research and pioneered initiatives like the inSocialWork podcast, reaching 200+ countries. Her research focuses on EMDR therapy, mindfulness, and addressing systemic challenges through technology.
Key professional roles include board membership in the National Deans and Directors of Schools of Social Work (NADD) and contributions to national task forces on trauma and disasters. She is a Board Certified Expert in Traumatic Stress and holds certifications in EMDR therapy and clinical social work (LCSW-R).
Her scholarship bridges clinical practice and policy, with over 40 years of experience as a clinician, educator, and researcher. Current interests include leveraging digital tools for social good, social innovation, and advancing trauma-informed education in crises like the pandemic.
