Nancy Harrington is a Professor in the Department of Communication at the University of Kentucky's College of Communication and Information. She holds a joint appointment in Health, Behavior, and Society and is part of the Substance Use and UNITE Research Priority Areas. Her academic qualifications include a Ph.D. (1992), M.A. (1987), and B.A. (1986) from the University of Kentucky and University of Cincinnati.
Her research focuses on health communication, particularly in healthcare provider-patient interactions, HIV/HCV screening interventions, cost-of-care conversations, and behavioral health. She has led over 40 grants/projects, including studies on emergency department HIV/HCV screening interventions and pharmacist-led tobacco treatment programs. Notable awards include the University Research Professor (2018), ICA Fellow (2023), and multiple health communication accolades.
Harrington’s work addresses healthcare communication strategies for diverse populations, emphasizing message design, audience-centered approaches, and systemic healthcare challenges like deprescribing and polypharmacy. She collaborates on projects integrating behavioral models (e.g., integrative model of behavioral prediction) to improve health outcomes.
