Nancy Borstelmann, PhD, MPH, LCSW, is an Assistant Professor at the Yale Child Study Center and co-director of the Early Onset Cancer Program at Yale Cancer Center and Smilow Cancer Hospital. She holds appointments in Advanced Clinical Social Work, the Child Study Center, and Yale Cancer Center. Her roles include Chief of Family and Behavioral Health Services in Hematology/Oncology at the Child Study Center. Dr. Borstelmann’s education includes a BS in Biology from Tufts University, an MPH in Chronic Disease Epidemiology from Yale, an MSW in Adult Mental Health from UNC-Chapel Hill, and a PhD in Social Work from Simmons College.
Her research and clinical work focus on holistic care for cancer patients and families, with emphasis on psychosocial distress screening, disparities in cancer care, and caregiver challenges. She has led initiatives like patient navigation programs for marginalized populations and psychosocial screening systems at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Current research topics include early-onset cancer caregiving, parenting with cancer, and end-of-life communication.
Dr. Borstelmann serves on the advisory board of Infinite Strength, a nonprofit supporting single mothers with metastatic breast cancer. Her professional experience includes roles as Senior Director of Social Work at Dana-Farber and Chief of the Division of Social Work in Psychosocial Oncology and Palliative Care. She actively contributes to interdisciplinary teams addressing cancer care equity and survivorship.
