Prof. Nan Zhang is a Professor of Evidence-based Political Research at the University of Mannheim, leading the Emmy-Noether research group 'Making Diversity Work' at the Mannheim Centre for European Social Research (MZES). His work bridges Political Science and Sociology, focusing on intergroup relations, language and identity, civic behavior, and the impact of ethnic diversity and immigration on societal dynamics. He holds a Ph.D. in Political Science from Stanford University, a J.D. from Stanford Law School, and a double B.A. in Economics and Political Science from UC Berkeley. Prior roles include positions at the Max Planck Institute and the European University Institute.
Research interests include experimental methods, causal inference, and their application to questions of social cohesion, institutional trust, and anti-corruption strategies. Current projects examine diversity's societal effects and the role of norms in political polarization. His work has been published in top journals like the American Political Science Review and PNAS.
Teaching focuses on causal inference and experimental design. Grants include the DFG Emmy-Noether Programme for the 'Making Diversity Work' project. Zhang collaborates widely, emphasizing reproducibility in research through initiatives like the Crowdsourced Replication Project.
