Professor Jutta Mata serves as Vice President for Research and Career Paths in Academia at the University of Mannheim, holding the Chair of Health Psychology since 2015. She co-directs the Mannheim Center for Data Science and maintains affiliations with the Mannheim Centre for European Social Research (MZES) and the Max Planck Institute for Human Development in Berlin. Key leadership roles include chairing the Socio-Economic Panel (SOEP) academic advisory board and serving on the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW) Scientific Advisory Board and GESIS Leibniz Institute Board of Trustees.
Her educational trajectory includes Psychology studies at Göttingen, Lisbon, and Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, culminating in a doctorate from the International Max Planck Research School LIFE. Postdoctoral research stints occurred in Lisbon, Stanford, and Basel before her Mannheim appointment.
Mata's research program investigates health determinants with emphasis on nutrition, physical activity, and obesity-related behaviors. She examines how social inequalities, discrimination, and family dynamics influence health outcomes through longitudinal and experimental designs. Current work increasingly integrates data science methods to analyze sustainable food systems and behavior change interventions, particularly regarding meat reduction and adolescent health.
Analysis of her 2023-2025 publications reveals strong interdisciplinary convergence across psychology, public health, and environmental science. Dominant themes include behavioral insights for sustainable diets, discrimination impacts on adolescent well-being, and generational dynamics in family meals. Methodologically, she combines traditional experimental approaches with innovative techniques like generative AI simulations of persuasive dialogues and social media analytics.
As former equal opportunity commissioner (2018-2022), Mata championed institutional diversity initiatives. Her policy engagement extends through the German Psychological Society's "Mensch, Klima, Nachhaltigkeit" interest group, where she connects psychological science with climate action.
Collaborative structures central to her work include the Mannheim Center for Data Science (co-directorship), MZES research networks, and international consortia like the NoHoW study on weight loss maintenance. These platforms enable cross-disciplinary examination of how individual behaviors intersect with societal structures to shape health outcomes.
