Nam Vo is a Professor and Deputy Vice Chair of Research at the University of Pittsburgh, with joint appointments at the Department of Pathology, UPMC Aging Institute, Clinical and Translational Science Institute, and McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine.
Education:
- PhD, University of California at Berkeley
- Post-doctoral training, University of California Keck School of Medicine
Dr. Vo's research focuses on the biology of musculoskeletal aging, intervertebral disc degeneration, and low back pain biomarkers. His work explores cellular senescence, metabolic symbiosis in discs, and therapeutic development for age-related spinal conditions. Publications highlight collaborations with interdisciplinary teams and NIH grants.
Recent articles emphasize molecular mechanisms of disc aging, lactate metabolism, and transgene systems for therapeutic intervention. His work bridges fundamental aging biology with translational strategies for musculoskeletal health.
Scientific Awards:
- ISSLS Prize in Basic Science (2021)
Grants:
- NIH U19AR076725 (Co-PI, 2019-2024): HEALing LBP3 phenotyping
- NIH U19AR076725-Supplemental (Co-PI, 2022-2024): Non-LBP control phenotyping
- NIH U19AR076725-Supplemental (Co-I, 2021-2024): BACPAC BEST Trial
- NIH 1R01AR081234-01 (PI, 2022-2026): Metabolic symbiosis research
- NIH/NIA R01 AG044376-01 (PI, 2023-207): Disc aging mechanisms
Dr. Vo leads the Ferguson Spine Research Laboratory, which investigates aging-related spinal degeneration and develops regenerative strategies.
