Dr. Nafay Choudhury is an Assistant Professor of Law (Socio-Legal Studies) at LSE Law School, London School of Economics and Political Science. His research focuses on legal pluralism, private governance, and socio-legal dynamics in fragile states, particularly in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. He holds a PhD from King’s College London, a JD/BCL from McGill University, and advanced degrees in economics from Queen’s University and McGill.
Research & Education: His current book project examines non-state legal ordering through ethnographic studies of Afghan money exchangers (under contract with Cambridge University Press). He co-edited Frontier Ethnographies: Deconstructing Research Experiences in Afghanistan and Pakistan (Berghahn, 2024). Previous roles include British Academy Research Fellowships at LSE and Oxford, and postdoctoral positions at Harvard, Stanford, and the University of Toronto.
Awards & Recognition: Honors include the Socio-Legal Studies Association Article Prize, Asian Law & Society Association Award, and multiple fellowships from institutions like the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada.
Fieldwork & Global Engagement: Conducted extensive fieldwork in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Japan, and Malaysia. Engaged in policy work through the Afghanistan Legal Education Project and academic collaborations at institutions like the Max Planck Institute for Comparative and International Private Law.
