Dr. Nadège Compaoré is an Assistant Professor of International Relations at the University of Toronto Mississauga, affiliated with the Environmental Governance Lab. Her work focuses on sovereignty claims in African states, natural resource governance, and intersections of gender/race in global politics. She holds a Ph.D. from Queen’s University (Political Studies), with fieldwork in Gabon, Ghana, and South Africa. Her current book project examines Permanent Sovereignty over Natural Resources principles in Africa’s oil governance.
Research interests span International Relations theory, African politics, environmental politics, and Black feminist internationalism. She co-edited New Approaches to the Governance of Natural Resources: Insights from Africa (2015). Compaoré serves on boards for Women in International Security Canada and the Canadian Association of African Studies.
Her publications explore themes like resource extraction impacts, small-state diplomacy, and water governance in Africa. Teaching incorporates African literature/film to contextualize political dynamics. During the pandemic, she developed interests in indoor plant cultivation as a stress-management practice.
