Nadja Gernalzick is an Adjunct Professor at the Obama Institute for Transnational American Studies at the University of Mainz and a Senior Research Fellow at the Department of English and American Studies at the University of Vienna. She holds habilitation, PhD, and MA degrees in comparative literature and American studies from the University of Mainz, following undergraduate studies at San Jose State University and postgraduate research at Columbia University.
Research Interests: Her work integrates semiotics, media theory, and transdisciplinary methodologies to explore intersections of literature, cultural studies, and theoretical frameworks. She focuses on Anthropocene theory, posthumanism, decoloniality, and material culture studies, with a particular emphasis on narratological and intersectional approaches to the mother figure in Anthropocene discourse. Her research also addresses methodological nationalisms and the comparativist debate on world literature in postcolonial and decolonial contexts.
Publications & Projects: She has authored monographs on economy and money in Derrida's grammatology, filmic autobiography, and temporality. Currently, she is co-editing Auto/Biography and Reputation Politics (Routledge, 2025) and writing a narratological study of the mother in Anthropocene theory (Palgrave Macmillan, 2025). She led the multimedia documentary project ARMY STORE/ARMY STORY (2001) and contributes to scholarly editing projects, including the transcription of Heinrich Schliemann's diaries.
