Nader Hashemi is an Associate Professor at Georgetown University's Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service and Director of the Alwaleed Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding. His expertise spans Middle East politics, authoritarianism, democracy promotion, and Islam-West relations.
Education: Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Toronto. Former roles include founding Director of the Center for Middle East Studies at the Josef Korbel School of International Studies (University of Denver), Andrew W. Mellon Postdoctoral Fellow at Northwestern University, and Visiting Assistant Professor at UCLA Global Institute.
Research focuses on intersections of comparative politics and political theory, including secularism critiques, human rights in non-Western contexts, and democratic struggles. Media engagements include frequent commentary on PBS, NPR, CNN, and Al Jazeera.
Non-Resident Fellow at Democracy for the Arab World Now (DAWN). Current book projects explore Israel/Palestine divides and edit the Oxford Handbook on Islam and Secularism.
