N. Peter Armitage is a Professor in the William H. Miller III Department of Physics & Astronomy at Johns Hopkins University (JHU), affiliated with the Krieger School of Arts & Sciences. His research focuses on experimental condensed matter physics, particularly quantum phenomena in low-temperature materials such as superconductors and magnetic systems. He leads the Armitage Lab, which develops novel THz spectroscopic techniques to study emergent quantum behaviors in complex materials. His work includes probing quantum criticality, topological insulators, and strongly correlated electron systems.
Dr. Armitage holds a B.S. from Rutgers University (1994) and a Ph.D. from Stanford University (2002). He has received prestigious awards including the NSF Career Award, Sloan Fellowship, and the 2023 Brown Investigator Award. His lab is part of the DOE-funded Institute for Quantum Matter (IQM), collaborating with Princeton University to advance understanding of quantum many-body systems.
Research interests emphasize THz-range optical techniques to explore material dynamics at their natural frequency scales. Key areas include exotic superconductors, topological materials, and systems near quantum critical points. The lab’s innovations in THz polarimetry and nonlinear spectroscopy have enabled groundbreaking insights into electronic and magnetic excitations.
Notable contributions include studies on Planckian dissipation in cuprates, magnetic continuum excitations in Kitaev materials, and energy relaxation in Dirac semimetals. His team’s work bridges advanced spectroscopy with theoretical analysis, driving progress in quantum materials research.
