Mélanie Knight

Dr. Mélanie Knight is a Professor of Sociology and Interim Associate Dean, Research and Graduate Studies at Toronto Metropolitan University. Her work focuses on Black activism, collective economic initiatives, and Black women business owners, with a critical lens on race and gender in entrepreneurial discourse. She holds offices in organizations like the Black Canadian Studies Association (President) and the Ontario Black History Society.

Dr. Knight earned her PhD in Sociology & Equity Studies from OISE/University of Toronto. Her research examines historical and contemporary Black Canadian experiences, including the role of Black organizations and the pandemic's disproportionate impact on Black women. She has published widely in journals like Gender, Work and Organization and Canadian Journal of History.

She received the Viola Desmond Faculty Award (2018) and collaborates with community organizations promoting Black health, heritage, and history. Courses taught include SOC 530 (Blackness and Freedom) and SOC 472 (At Work in a Changing World).
