Dr. Notisha Massaquoi is an Assistant Professor in Health Education and Promotion at the Department of Health and Society, University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC), with a graduate-level cross-appointment to the Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work (FIFSW). She holds a PhD from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE), University of Toronto, an MSW from FIFSW, and a BA in Psychology from Western University.
- Research Focus: Community-based mixed methods addressing anti-Black racism, health disparities, and social determinants of health in Black communities.
- Leadership: Founder and director of the Black Health Equity Lab (BHEL), which develops advocacy tools for Black communities in Canadian systems.
- Community Work: Founded organizations such as Women’s Health in Women’s Hands, the only primary healthcare center for Black and racialized women in North America.
Her work includes postdoctoral research on homicide survivor support systems and collaborations with institutions like TAIBU Community Health Centre. Dr. Massaquoi’s research and advocacy center Black communities’ resilience against systemic inequities.
