Mytheli Sreenivas is Chair and Designated Professor of Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at The Ohio State University, affiliated with the College of Arts and Sciences and the Department of History. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania (2001) and a B.A. from Yale University (1994). Her research focuses on modern South Asian history, particularly the intersection of gender, reproduction, and colonialism. Notable works include Wives, Widows, and Concubines: The Conjugal Family Ideal in Colonial India (2008) and Reproductive Politics and the Making of Modern India (2021), which explore how gender norms shaped nation-building and modernity. She has received prestigious awards such as the Joseph Elder Prize and ACLS Open Access Book Prize recognition.
Her teaching emphasizes transnational feminisms, reproductive justice, and South Asian history, earning her the Ratner Distinguished Teaching Award. Research interests span colonial family structures, reproductive politics, and the historical roots of contemporary gender debates. Recent publications analyze India’s abortion laws, Indo-American birth control politics, and the colonial legacy of child marriage legislation. She actively engages in public scholarship through platforms like The Washington Post and Scroll.in.
Labs/teams: Leads interdisciplinary research on gender and reproduction in South Asia, collaborating with historians, sociologists, and feminist scholars. Supervises graduate students in Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies and History departments.
