Myra Keep is a Professor at the University of Western Australia (UWA), affiliated with the School of Earth and Oceans and the International Space Centre. She holds roles such as Chair of the Australasian Universities Geoscience Education Network and member of the Australian Geoscience Council. Her expertise spans structural geology, tectonics, seismology, and geohazards, with a focus on Precambrian to Quaternary deformation, seismic interpretation, and marine geology. She leads projects in the Japan Trench, North West Shelf, and East Timor, emphasizing paleoseismology and tectonic evolution. Keep has received awards including the Global Impact Award for Teaching Innovation (2023) and the UWA Teaching Fellowship (2014).
Education: BSc (University College London, 1987), MSc (University of British Columbia, 1989), PhD (Southern Methodist University, 1994).
Research interests include structural geology, seismic interpretation, neotectonics, and planetary geology. Key projects involve IODP Expedition 386 (Japan Trench paleoseismology) and SO257 (North West Shelf geohazards). She collaborates internationally, addressing subduction zone dynamics, mass transport deposits, and basement reactivation.
Teaching contributions include developing award-winning outdoor learning programs and coordinating geology courses. She actively participates in educational committees and national/international geoscience organizations.
Awards:
- Global Impact Award - Innovation in Teaching and Learning (2023)
- Senior Fellow, Higher Education Academy (2020)
- UWA Guild Students' Choice Award (2017)
- Petroleum Exploration Society of Australia Meritorious Service Award (2016)
- UWA Teaching Fellowship (2014)
Grants include ARC Linkage grants on basin evolution and mineral systems, and IODP-funded research on Japan Trench paleoseismology. She has also led DAAD and industry-funded projects on geohazards and inversion tectonics.
Labs/Teams: Collaborates with IODP, RV Sonne expeditions, and UWA's geology research programs in East Timor. Her work integrates field, seismic, and remote-sensing data to study tectonic processes.
