Myles Allen is a Professor of Geosystem Science at the University of Oxford, affiliated with the School of Geography and the Environment and the Department of Physics. He serves as Head of Atmospheric, Oceanic and Planetary Physics and leads the ECI Climate Research Programme.
- Environmental Change Institute
- Department of Physics
His research focuses on the interplay between human activities and natural factors in driving climate change and extreme weather risks. He pioneered the concept of a finite carbon budget in 2005, emphasizing net zero emissions to halt warming, and currently explores Geological Net Zero strategies involving carbon capture and storage.
Recent work includes climate modeling via Oxford Net Zero (2021–2025) and the distributed computing project climateprediction.net (2000–present). His publications span climate attribution, carbon budgeting, and policy-relevant modeling, with a strong emphasis on high-impact policy engagement and interdisciplinary climate solutions.
Scientific awards include:
- Appleton Medal and Prize (2005)
- CBE for climate services (2024)
- Fellow of the Royal Society
- Featured on BBC’s Life Scientific
As Principal Investigator for Oxford Net Zero (5.5 research roles) and climateprediction.net (£4m budget), he oversees teams of 4 postdocs and 5 doctoral students. His IPCC involvement includes coordinating the 1.5°C Special Report and contributing to multiple assessments since 2000.
