Mustafa Akay is a Research Fellow at the Department of Middle East Studies, University of Oslo. His academic background includes a BA in Sociology and History (Boğaziçi University, 2013), an MA in History (Boğaziçi University, 2019), and prior experience as a Research Assistant at Istanbul Bilgi University (2017–2021). His research focuses on cultural history, historical anthropology, conceptual history, and temporality, with an emphasis on the Ottoman Empire's early modern and modern periods. His current PhD project examines world histories written by Ottoman historians from the 16th to the 19th century, exploring semantic shifts in universal historiography and modern temporal frameworks.
Key research interests include global history approaches, transnational interactions, and the interplay between textual analysis and real-world contexts. He investigates how concepts, ideas, and translations circulating through commodities and people shaped historical narratives during periods of increased global connectivity.
