University of North Carolina at Chapel Hillمعرفی
Musa Manga, PhD, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering at the Gillings School of Global Public Health, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. His work focuses on developing low-cost, scalable solutions to interrupt disease transmission from excreta-related hazards, with particular emphasis on underserved communities in both developing and developed nations. Key research areas include fecal sludge management, water sanitation equity, pathogen risk modeling, and sustainable sanitation technologies.
Dr. Manga holds a PhD and maintains affiliations at institutions such as Jiangsu University of Technology (China) and Makerere University (Uganda). His research integrates environmental engineering, microbiology, and public health principles to address challenges like climate resilience of sanitation infrastructure, greenhouse gas emissions from sanitation systems, and social barriers to safe sanitation access.
Research Themes:
- Equitable access to safe sanitation and water
- Pathogen hazard modeling and risk assessment
- Life cycle costing of sanitation programs
- Climate change mitigation through sustainable waste management
- Optimization of bioresource recovery from fecal sludge
His recent work includes studies on:
- Sanitation resilience in informal settlements (e.g., Kenya)
- Greenhouse gas emissions from on-site sanitation systems
- Hydrochar composites for wastewater treatment
- Social barriers to sanitation access in the U.S.
Dr. Manga collaborates with global networks like the PROMISE Consortium, applying team science approaches to build environmental health research capacity. His work bridges technical innovation with policy implementation to achieve scalable public health outcomes.
