Mukul S. Bansal is an Associate Professor of Computer Science & Engineering at the University of Connecticut's School of Computing. His research focuses on computational biology and bioinformatics, particularly computational phylogenetics, comparative genomics, and algorithmic optimization. He leads the Computational Biology Lab, developing computational methods and software tools to address fundamental biological questions. His work integrates theoretical computer science with genomic data analysis.
He maintains active participation in computational biology communities, including program committee roles at conferences like ISMB/ECCB, RECOMB, and ACM-BCB. His group offers PhD and undergraduate research opportunities in areas such as phylogenetic analysis, horizontal gene transfer, and genomic algorithm development. Contact: mukul.bansal@uconn.edu, ITE Building Room 359.
Research interests include phylogenetic tree reconciliation, domain-gene-species evolution models, and algorithmic solutions for large-scale genomic data. He has developed tools like TreeFix-TP, TNet, and virDTL, contributing to viral evolution and cancer genomics studies. His lab emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches bridging computer science and biology.
