Muhammad Nawaz serves as Assistant Professor of Economics at the University of North Carolina Asheville, bringing extensive international research experience in macro finance and household finance. His academic journey spans institutions across Pakistan and the United States, with current teaching responsibilities in economic theory and applications.
His educational background includes:
- Ph.D. in Economics from Texas Tech University
- MPhil in Economics from Pakistan Institute of Development Economics (PIDE)
- M.Sc. in Economics from Quaid-i-Azam University, Pakistan
- B.A. in Economics from University of the Punjab, Pakistan
Dr. Nawaz's research critically examines credit market imperfections through the lens of asymmetric information (adverse selection and moral hazard), banks' monitoring costs, and lender behavior. His work spans business/corporate finance, climate finance, business cycles, labor finance, and retirement finance, with strong emphasis on financial inclusion as a solution to macroeconomic instability and development challenges. He advocates replacing physical collateral requirements with social collateral frameworks to improve credit access for unbanked populations.

His funded research with IDRC, SANDEE, Frankfurt School, and HEC Pakistan has produced policy recommendations for financial inclusion-based economic development.
