Msilikale Msilanga is a Senior Researcher and doctoral candidate at the Department of Geography and Geology, University of Turku. He specializes in urban resilience, geospatial data infrastructure, and community-driven spatial planning. Currently, he serves as Project Manager for the Resilience Academy and GeoICT4e initiatives, fostering geospatial education and capacity-building in Tanzania. His work integrates free and open-source software (FOSS) with participatory approaches to enhance disaster risk management and sustainable urban development.
Teaching focuses on geospatial databases, data quality, and visualization at the MSc level, emphasizing practical applications in land use planning and participatory GIS. Key projects include the World Bank-funded Tanzania Urban Resilience Program (TURP), where he developed community mapping initiatives and youth training programs. His research addresses challenges in African urban contexts, including informal settlement mapping and climate resilience strategies.
Collaborative endeavors include partnerships with Tanzanian universities and institutions like the World Bank, emphasizing knowledge transfer and digital competency development. Ongoing work explores open science practices and geospatial data co-creation between Finland and Tanzania.
