Moya Burns is an Associate Professor in Ecology and Environmental Science at the University of Leicester's School of Biological Sciences. Her interdisciplinary work connects ecology with citizen science and environmental education, addressing contemporary ecological challenges through participatory approaches.
With professional experience spanning ecological consultancy, government agencies, and the charity sector, Burns investigates how citizen science can enhance both ecological research and student learning. She develops methodologies that generate meaningful environmental data while providing authentic research experiences.
Her research focuses on applied ecological questions including urban biodiversity enhancement, forest ecosystem recovery, and river restoration. She collaborates with Leicester City Council, Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust, The Canal and River Trust, The National Forest, Earthwatch, and Twycross Zoo.
Burns chairs the University Biodiversity Working Group, bringing together students, academics, estates teams, and local government to improve campus biodiversity. She also co-leads the Environmental Change and Loss Research challenge at Leicester's Institute for Environmental Futures.
In collaboration with psychology colleagues, she examines how citizen science participation affects wellbeing outcomes for both students and community members, exploring connections between ecological engagement and mental health.
