Dr. Neil Burns is a Lecturer in Ecology at the University of Glasgow’s School of Social & Environmental Sustainability, based at the Dumfries Campus. He is also an Affiliate Researcher at the School of Biodiversity, One Health & Veterinary Medicine. His research focuses on marine systems, including population distributions, ecosystem health, and fisheries ecology. Burns holds a PhD (2018) and MRes (2013) from the University of Glasgow, along with a BSc (1999) in Zoology.

Research Interests: Marine spatial patterns, human impacts on ecosystems, fisheries management, and quantitative methods such as otolith microchemistry and citizen science. His work spans global marine environments, including the Caribbean, Southeast Asia, and Scotland.
Recent Research: Includes studies on fish habitat diversity in Scotland, coral reef health in the Caribbean, and pandemic impacts on Indonesian tuna fisheries. He employs SCUBA surveys and stereo video systems for fieldwork.
Teaching: Convenor for courses on Ecology, Environment & Conservation and Dissertation supervision. Also contributes to modules on environmental stewardship, tropical marine biology, and aquatic environment management.
Advising & Grants: Supervises 4 PhD students focusing on seascape ecology, marine rewilding, microplastics, and sedimentation effects. His work integrates statistical methods with interdisciplinary collaborations.
