Morris Bell is a Professor Emeritus and Senior Research Scientist in the Department of Psychiatry at Yale University School of Medicine, and a Senior Research Career Scientist at the VA Rehabilitation Research and Development Service. His career focuses on cognitive remediation, vocational rehabilitation, and interventions for individuals with severe mental disorders. He developed the Virtual Reality Job Interview Training program and the Automated Test of Embodied Cognition (ATEC), both recognized as evidence-based practices.
Dr. Bell holds a PhD in Clinical Psychology from George Washington University (1976). His research is supported by grants from NIMH, NIDA, NSF, and the VA. He has authored over 170 publications, including studies on social cognition in schizophrenia, cognitive training for substance use disorders, and robotics in vocational training. He directs the VA/Yale Learning Based Recovery Center and the VITAL program for veterans.
His awards include the APA's Distinguished Contribution to Science in Public Service and VA's Senior Research Career Scientist designation. His work emphasizes translating research into clinical tools, such as the Bell Lysaker Emotion Recognition Test (BLERT) and the Work Behavior Inventory.
