Dr. Joanna Fiszdon is an Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Yale University School of Medicine and Director of Psychosocial Rehabilitation Psychology Services at VA Connecticut Healthcare System (VACHS). She holds a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Minnesota (2000) and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Weill Cornell Medical College/New York Presbyterian Hospital (2002). Her research focuses on developing and evaluating social cognitive, cognitive, and vocational interventions for individuals with serious mental illness (SMI) and substance use disorders.
Dr. Fiszdon leads clinical trials such as the 'Understanding Social Situations' study, exploring novel social cognitive training methods. She coordinates the VACHS GMH-SMI predoctoral internship track and chairs the VACHS Research and Development Committee. Her work emphasizes translational research, including group-based metacognitive therapies (MERITg), cognitive remediation efficacy, and the integration of physical/cognitive exercise for SMI patients.
Key research areas include: social cognition deficits in psychosis, motivational factors in treatment adherence, and neurofeedback-enhanced cognitive training. She has secured grants from the VA Rehabilitation Research and Development Service and NIMH. Her publications span 20+ years, addressing topics like cognitive reserve in psychosis, vocational outcomes, and multimodal rehabilitation strategies combining virtual reality and exercise physiology.
Collaborations include work with Godfrey Pearlson, Morris Bell, and Steve Martino. Dr. Fiszdon’s labs and teams operate within Yale’s Psychiatry Department and VA Connecticut’s psychosocial rehabilitation programs, advancing recovery-oriented care and personalized interventions for mental health challenges.
