Prof. Moritz Heß is a Professor of Gerontology at the Department of Social Sciences, Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences, and Head of the Competence Center for Resource-Oriented Aging Research (REAL). His research focuses on aging populations, retirement transitions, social inequalities, and intergenerational policies. He holds a PhD from the University of Mannheim (2016), an M.Sc. in Gerontology from Vrije University Amsterdam, and dual bachelor's degrees in Sociology from the University of Mannheim and Free University Berlin. Previously, he led research units at the Institute of Gerontology in Dortmund and the SOCIUM Research Center in Bremen. His work bridges gerontology with public policy, digital inclusion, and labor market dynamics. Awards include the 2025 Teaching Award and multiple best paper recognitions from German demographic societies.
Key research areas include ageism in education, urban age-friendliness, caregiver student challenges, and policy responses to demographic shifts. He co-edits special issues on retirement inequalities and collaborates internationally on aging-related projects. Current initiatives address caregiving student support and long-term care system projections. His research outputs span peer-reviewed journals (e.g., Frontiers in Sociology, Ageing & Society) and policy reports for institutions like the German Pension Insurance and Intergenerational Foundations.
