Monty Cole

Monty Cole is an Assistant Professor at the School of Theatre and Music, University of Illinois Chicago (UIC). A theatre and film writer-director from Oak Park, IL, he collaborates with institutions like Steppenwolf, Goodman Theatre, and Center for New Performance. His work focuses on re-imagining classic texts and developing new plays, alongside teaching and film projects.

Education:

• BA in Theatre Studies from Emerson College
• MFA in Directing from the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts)

Research and Creative Work: Cole's practice bridges theatre directing, playwriting, and film. His plays American Teenager (Goodman Theatre commission) and Black Like Me (adaptation of John Howard Griffin’s novel) highlight his engagement with contemporary and historical narratives. He actively develops short films, including Six Feet Apart and Whole, and participates in new play workshops. His residency at the Center for New Performance underscores his commitment to experimental theatre.

Notable Collaborations and Projects: Cole has worked with prestigious companies such as Center Theatre Group, The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis, and Victory Gardens Theater. Recent projects include directing the UIC season opener Reverb and serving as a B2F Research Scholar. His approach integrates interdisciplinary storytelling, emphasizing diversity and innovation in performance.
