Monique Taylor

Dr. Monique Taylor is a University Lecturer in World Politics at the University of Helsinki's Faculty of Social Sciences, with additional affiliations at the Lau China Institute, King's College London, and the Institute for Security and Development Policy in Stockholm where she serves as an Associated Senior Research Fellow. She also holds positions as a Research Affiliate at King's College London since 2022 and as an Editorial Board Member for the Journal of Current Chinese Affairs since 2022.

Dr. Taylor received her BA/BSc (Hons 1) and MA (Hons 1) in International Relations from the University of Auckland, New Zealand, and earned her PhD in International Political Economy from the University of Queensland, Australia. During her academic journey, she participated in exchanges and summer schools at Freie Universität Berlin, Charles University in Prague, and the University of Montpellier. Since 2019, she has been living and working in Helsinki, Finland, after spending formative years in Argentina, Egypt, Netherlands, UK, Malaysia, and Australia.

Dr. Taylor specializes in global political economy and international relations, with a particular focus on how shifts in global power, technological change, and state-led economic strategies—particularly those advanced by China—are reshaping the international political and economic order. Her research delves into monetary governance, authoritarianism, and the transformation of regional security architectures, especially in the Indo-Pacific region. She has made significant contributions to understanding China's digital authoritarianism, renminbi internationalization, and the geopolitical implications of these developments.

Dr. Taylor's scholarly work reveals a clear trend toward examining the intersection of technology, governance, and geopolitical competition, with increasing emphasis on China's role in shaping global economic and security architectures. Her publications span academic journals, edited volumes, and policy commentary, reflecting her commitment to bridging scholarly research with policy-relevant insights. Recent work shows growing attention to digital governance, monetary innovation, and the evolving security dynamics in the Indo-Pacific region.

Dr. Taylor serves as a supervisor in the Doctoral Program in Political, Social and Regional Change at the University of Helsinki. She is currently co-coordinating a €1.5 million Horizon Europe Twinning project, "The EU in the Volatile Indo-Pacific Region" (EUVIP), in partnership with Palacký University in the Czech Republic. Her extensive peer review activities for journals such as Politics and Governance, Journal of Chinese Political Science, and Perspectives on Politics demonstrate her standing in the academic community.

As an active member of research networks, Dr. Taylor contributes to Una Europa's Self-Steering Committee for Europe and the World and participates in international conferences and workshops focused on economic security and Indo-Pacific affairs. Her work bridges academic research with policy engagement through commentary in outlets like East Asia Forum, The Diplomat, and The Interpreter.
