Alfred Gerstl is an Associate Professor at the Department of Asian Studies, Palacký University in Olomouc (Czech Republic), specializing in International Relations with a focus on the Indo-Pacific region, particularly Southeast Asia. He leads two EU-funded projects: 'The EU in the volatile Indo-Pacific region' (EUVIP, 2023-2025) and 'European-Southeast Asian relations: their current state and future prospect' (EUSEAR, 2024-2026). Previously, he held roles as Marie Sklodowska-Curie Fellow and Senior Researcher in the EU project 'Sinophone Borderlands' at Palacký University.
He serves as President of the Central European Institute of Asian Studies (CEIAS) and Senior Advisor at the Austria Institute for Europe and Security Policy (AIES). His past positions include Associate Professorships at Novosibirsk State University and the Higher School of Economics in St. Petersburg (Russia, 2013-2018).
He teaches Strategic Gaming, Indo-Pacific Dynamics, and related courses at multiple institutions, including the University of Vienna, Vienna Diplomatic Academy, and the Theresian Military Academy.
Gerstl's research emphasizes EU-Asia relations, China's regional role, and geopolitical strategies in Southeast Asia. His recent work explores EU de-risking strategies, Taiwan-CEE relations, and public opinion dynamics in the Indo-Pacific.
Awards: Marie Sklodowska-Curie Fellowship (2018-2020).
