Monique Mitchell Turner is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Communication at Michigan State University. Her research focuses on the role of emotion in health and risk communication, particularly exploring how emotions like guilt, shame, anger, and fear influence message design, risk perception, and cognitive processing. She has held previous academic leadership roles including Associate Dean at George Washington University's Milken Institute of Public Health and faculty positions at University of Oklahoma, University of Texas, and University of Maryland.
Her work integrates eye-tracking technology to study visual attention to nutrition labels and combines bio-physiological measures with communication theory. Key research areas include obesity prevention strategies, antibiotic resistance messaging, and social norms influencing health behaviors. Turner has pioneered the 'anger activism model' and conducted studies on pandemic communication during COVID-19, emphasizing moral norms and emotional appeals in public health campaigns.
Her research demonstrates a focus on vulnerable populations, including African American women in clinical research, LGBTQ+ communities in HIV prevention, and low-income families in nutrition interventions. Turner's contributions bridge communication theory with practical health interventions, often employing mixed-methods approaches.
Notable applied projects include evaluating antibiotic stewardship strategies in urgent care settings, developing anti-obesity interventions targeting sugary drinks, and examining the impact of social media on health behaviors. Her work consistently addresses structural inequities in health communication through community-based participatory research.
