Monika Thakur

Monika Thakur is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Law and Politics at Algoma University. She specializes in International Relations, International Security, and Critical Security Studies with a focus on the Global South. Her research examines fragility, conflict dynamics, climate change impacts, and post-conflict peacebuilding in regions like Africa, the Middle East, and South Asia. Thakur holds a PhD and MSc from the London School of Economics and a BA from the University of Toronto.

Research Interests: Her work critically analyzes necropolitics, transitional justice, climate-induced violence, and decolonial approaches to security. She has conducted fieldwork in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria, Jordan, Egypt, and other Global South countries. Thakur previously served as a Senior Policy Advisor (Intelligence Policy) with Public Safety Canada and has taught at institutions including LSE, York University, and McMaster University.

Teaching: Currently teaches courses on international politics, gun politics, and contemporary security studies at Algoma University.
