Monika Heupel

Monika Heupel is a Professor of Political Science at the University of Bamberg. Previously, she held positions at the WZB Berlin Social Science Center (2009–2014) as a senior research fellow in the Global Governance department, and conducted postdoctoral research at the United Nations University in Tokyo (2005–2006). Her work focuses on international law, security studies, global human rights policy, and institutional change theories.

She has held transnational fellowships at institutions including the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and Chatham House (2006–2008), and was a research associate at the Free University of Berlin (2008–2009). Her research examines UN sanctions mechanisms, due process standards, and the evolving governance approaches toward transnational threats like terrorism and WMD proliferation.

Her articles analyze how international institutions balance security imperatives with human rights protection, particularly through UN Security Council policies. Notable projects include studying the legitimacy of UN sanctions and the role of international organizations in protecting individual rights.
