Dr. Monika Freier is a Lecturer in Hindi Language and Literature at the Department of South Asian Studies, Institute of Asian and African Studies, Humboldt University of Berlin. She has held this role since January 2018 and is also affiliated with the DHARMA project.
- Doctorate in History from Freie Universität Berlin (2013)
- Master's degrees in German Language and Literature (University of Hamburg) and Modern German Literature/Indian Philology (Freie Universität Berlin)
Her research focuses on the history of emotions, religious reform movements, and cultural history of South Asia, with particular attention to Hindi advice literature, self-help genres, and moral education during colonial and post-colonial periods. Her 2012 article on the Gita Press explores intersections of spiritual reform and print culture in colonial India.
Dr. Freier has actively contributed to academic collaboration through roles such as Scientific Coordinator at the Max Planck Institute for Human Development (2013-2017) and research positions at Heidelberg University's South Asia Institute.
