Torsten Tschacher, PhD, is the Tamil Lecturer at the South Asia Institute of Heidelberg University, currently on leave. A Heisenberg Fellow of the DFG, his research explores Muslim identity formation around the Bay of Bengal during the 18th–19th centuries, focusing on historical, literary, and cultural dynamics in Tamil-speaking regions of South India and Sri Lanka.

Research Interests include the history and literature of Islam in South Asia, Indian Ocean connectivity, legal history, caste-religion intersections, and processes of vernacularization. He analyzes how mobile groups constructed identities during colonial transitions and investigates language ideologies in Tamil text cultures.
Teaching encompasses Tamil language (including Arabic-Tamil scripts), medieval/modern Tamil literature, book history, and printing traditions. He is currently finalizing a monograph on Islamic literature in Tamil and translating Tamil texts into German/English.
