Dr. Monica Vessio is a Lecturer in Commercial Law at the University of Reading’s School of Law, and a Senior Research Associate at the Centre for Commercial Law and Financial Regulation (CCFLR). She holds a BA, LLB from Rhodes University, an LLM (cum laude) and LLD from the University of Pretoria, and a postgraduate certificate in academic professional development from the University of Exeter. Her research focuses on the intersection of law, technology, and financial systems, particularly in areas such as smart contracts, blockchain, digital banking, and circular economy frameworks.
Dr. Vessio has led research projects including a Welsh European Funding Office (WEFO)-funded initiative exploring smart contracts in circular supply chains and a South African health sector project on servitisation agreements. She co-authors Banking Law and Practice (LexisNexis) and has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals. Her work addresses AI-driven financial ecosystems, cryptocurrency regulation, and consumer protection in digital payment systems.
She has presented at international conferences in Denmark, Germany, South Africa, and the UK, and is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Her expertise bridges legal theory and practice, with advisory roles for financial institutions and contributions to judicial decisions via cited scholarship.
