Monica L. Gerrek is an Associate Professor in the Department of Bioethics at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, with dual roles as Co-Director of both the Center for Biomedical Ethics and the Institute of Burn Ethics at The MetroHealth System. Her academic leadership extends to chairing MetroHealth’s Ethics Committee and spearheading initiatives like Bioethics Grand Rounds (2012) and Schwartz Center Rounds Committee (former chair).
- Education: PhD and MA in Philosophy, BSBA in Industrial and Labor Relations, and completion of the Cleveland Fellowship in Advanced Bioethics.
Dr. Gerrek specializes in Burn Ethics, focusing on autonomy in decision-making, paternalism in burn care, and monozygotic skin grafting. She also pioneers research in Correctional Health Ethics, Ethics of Addiction, and related areas. Her work has been recognized nationally, including the 2023 North American Burn Society David Beesinger Scholarship Award.
She contributes to education through courses like Bioethics: Dilemmas and Clinical Ethics Simulation Course, and serves on editorial and committee roles for the American Burn Association and the Journal of Burn Care and Research. Awards highlight her mentorship and team-based leadership in academic and clinical settings.
