Monica Florence is Associate Professor and Department Chair of Classical Studies and Comparative Literature at the College of Wooster. Her research examines transgender identity, sexuality, and cultural dynamics in Greek/Latin literature, with additional focus on classical reception in popular culture. She teaches courses spanning ancient mythology, gender studies, and Greek/Latin language instruction at all levels.
Research Focus: Interdisciplinary analysis of identity construction in antiquity and its modern interpretations, with publications on medical understandings of transgender identity and comedic representations of sexuality.
Student Advising: Has supervised 8 undergraduate Independent Studies including projects on:
- Philosophical analysis of Logos in John's Gospel
- Dionysian worship traditions
- Greek theatrical innovations
- Ancient heroes in modern comics
Recipient of Hewlett-Mellon and Henry Luce grants for Greek archaeological research. Directs study-abroad programs in Greece and serves as President of the Ohio Classical Conference.
