Monica Bravo is Assistant Professor of Art and Archaeology at Princeton University, specializing in the history of photography and modern art of the Americas. Her research examines intersections between visual culture, mineral economies, and environmental history.
Her award-winning book Greater American Camera: Making Modernism in Mexico (2021) traces artistic exchanges between U.S. photographers like Edward Weston and Mexican modernists and was supported by Terra and Wyeth foundations. Current project 'Silver Pacific' investigates photography's material dependence on mineral extraction through transpacific trade networks.
Bravo has held fellowships at the Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts, Georgia O'Keeffe Research Center, and Huntington Library. She co-founded Photography Network and contributes to Art Journal and American Art.
