John J. Curley is a Professor of Art History in the Department of Art at Wake Forest University, specializing in modern and contemporary art history with a focus on Cold War studies and photography. He holds an A.B. from Duke University and a Ph.D. from Yale University. His research explores postwar art's engagement with mass media, Cold War politics, and transnational cultural dynamics, supported by grants from institutions like the Getty Research Institute and the Terra Foundation.
Curley is the author of two award-winning books: A Conspiracy of Images: Andy Warhol, Gerhard Richter, and the Art of the Cold War (2013) and Global Art and the Cold War (2019). His recent work includes studies on Spanish Pop art under Franco's dictatorship and Morris Louis's Cold War-era paintings. Courses taught range from photographic history to global contemporary art.
His articles span topics like Cold War visual culture, abstract painting theory, and photography's role in mediating conflict. Key publications include analyses of Vesna Pavlović's photography and debates over Clement Greenberg's formalism in relation to scientific rationality.
