Monica Aas is an MRC Research Fellow in the Department of Social Genetic & Developmental Psychiatry. Her research focuses on understanding the interplay between childhood adversity, neurobiological processes, and severe mental disorders such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and psychosis. Key areas include cortisol regulation, telomere biology, and gene-environment interactions. She leads an active project titled 'Integrating psychological models with biological pathways in psychosis' funded by the MRC Medical Research Council (2022–2027).
- Research Interests: Childhood trauma, psychosis, cognitive dysfunction, inflammatory markers, telomere length, and psychiatric epigenetics
- Collaborations: EU-GEI study, international multi-center projects
Her most recent work explores connections between complex PTSD and psychotic-like experiences in adolescents, cortisol/CRP regulation in mental disorders, and telomere-cognition links in schizophrenia. Over 58 publications highlight her contributions to understanding biological and psychological mechanisms underlying mental health outcomes.
Grants and Projects: Principal Investigator for MRC-funded project analyzing biological and psychological pathways in psychosis.
