Professor Monda Halpern is a faculty member in the Department of History at Western University. She holds a PhD from Queen's University (1997) and specializes in 19th and 20th century Canadian and American Women's History, with a focus on Jewish History. Her research explores topics such as organized crime figures like Bessie Starkman, family desertion in early 20th century Ontario, and the intersection of gender, religion, and identity. She is affiliated with American Studies, The Jewish Studies Program, and the Collaborative Graduate Program in Migration and Ethnic Relations.
Teaching highlights include courses on Canadian popular culture, sexual history, and Jewish life in North America. Her publications include books like Alice in Shandehland (2015) and And on that Farm He had a Wife (2001), as well as numerous articles in journals like Canadian Jewish Studies and Ontario History. She has received multiple teaching awards, including the USC Teaching Honour Roll seven times, and research grants such as the Samuel Clark Research Fund.
Current research investigates family desertion cases in Ontario and the overlooked narratives of figures like Bessie Starkman, challenging traditional historiographies of gender and crime. She welcomes graduate students interested in these areas. Office hours during Fall 2024 are Thursdays 2:00-3:30 PM, though she will be on sabbatical from January to June 2025.
