Mona Heimonen is a Researcher at the Department of Media and Communication Studies, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Helsinki. Her work focuses on media, gender, and trans studies with a particular emphasis on trans identities, citizenship struggles, and political discourse in Finland and beyond.
She is involved in two major research projects:
- "Polarisation, Affect, Identity: Nordic P" (Participant, 2024–2027) funded by The Research Council Of Norway
- "IMAGINE: Improving mental wellbeing as a means of increasing inclusion of young people" (Participant, 2022–2025) funded by the Research Council of Finland
Her research explores themes such as trans epistemic recognition, media representation of gender minorities, and the intersection of law/policy with trans activism. Key contributions include analyses of hybrid media’s impact on political discourse and the paradoxes of trans visibility in public spheres.
She has presented at academic conferences like "Median ja viestintän tutkimuksen päivät 2024" and served as a peer reviewer for Journal of Gender Studies. Her work bridges theoretical frameworks from cultural studies, sociology, and queer theory to address contemporary socio-political challenges faced by gender minorities.
