Mollie Murphy is an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication Studies at Utah State University. Her work focuses on rhetorical criticism and theory, particularly examining the rhetoric of women environmentalists such as Rachel Carson, Jane Fonda, Jane Goodall, and Sandra Steingraber. She teaches courses in environmental communication, rhetorical criticism, and gender studies.
Dr. Murphy holds a B.A. in Communication Studies (2012), M.A. in Communication Studies (Rhetoric and Public Discourse, 2014), and Ph.D. in Communication Studies (Rhetorical Studies, 2018), all from the University of Montana and University of Georgia. Her research spans environmental rhetoric, maternal advocacy, and the intersection of social media with activism.
Her recent publications analyze the rhetorical strategies of environmentalists, including maternal appeals in toxics activism, the role of scientific research in anti-toxics discourse, and the use of hope in climate rhetoric. She also explores pedagogical methods like reflexive writing and autoethnography to foster inclusive learning environments.
Notable projects include studies on anti-fracking activism, the rhetoric of civil disobedience, and the portrayal of race in media like *The Help*. Her work bridges environmental advocacy, gender studies, and rhetorical theory to address contemporary social and ecological challenges.
