Shelley Aley is an Associate Professor at James Madison University's School of Writing, Rhetoric and Technical Communication since 1999. She holds a Ph.D. in English from Texas Christian University (1994), an M.A. in English from Southwest Missouri State University (1988), and a B.S.Ed. in English/Journalism from the same institution (1981). Her work focuses on historical rhetoric, particularly 18th- and 19th-century Scottish rhetoric, technology in writing instruction, and the rhetoric of science. She has contributed to Composition Studies, edited volumes on environmentalists, and advised publications on virtual workplace dynamics. Her research spans pedagogical innovations in first-year writing courses, online education, and the intersection of technology with rhetorical practices.
Key publications include a 2014 interview with Winifred Bryan Horner, analyses of Alexander Bain's educational reforms, and entries on environmental figures like Rachel Carson. She has also engaged in community writing through editorials and a weekly column. Her scholarship bridges historical rhetorical theory with contemporary issues in digital pedagogy and public discourse.
