Mohsen Mostafavi is the Alexander and Victoria Wiley Professor of Design and Harvard University Distinguished Service Professor at the Harvard Graduate School of Design (GSD), where he served as Dean from 2008-2019. His academic work bridges urbanization processes, technology, and aesthetics. Previously, he held leadership roles at Cornell University and the Architectural Association School of London. He studied architecture at the AA and conducted research on counter-reformation urban history at the Universities of Essex and Cambridge.
Research interests focus on urbanism, ecology, architectural history, and sustainable design. His publications include influential works like Ecological Urbanism and On Weathering, which explore environmental systems, urban theory, and architectural resilience. Mostafavi has curated exhibitions such as 'Instigations: Engaging Architecture, Landscape and the City' and contributed to global urban projects through advisory roles.
Professional service includes board memberships with the Norman Foster Foundation, Van Alen Institute, and Aga Khan Award for Architecture. At Harvard, he chairs committees on campus development and innovation. His academic leadership spans teaching at institutions like the University of Cambridge and University of Pennsylvania, emphasizing interdisciplinary urban strategies and design thinking.
Award-winning author and theorist, Mostafavi’s work addresses ethical dimensions of urban development and the intersection of architecture with socio-technical systems. Current engagements include projects on the future of American cities and sustainable planning in Exuma, Bahamas.
