Dr. Mohey Eldin El Shikh is a Senior Lecturer and Education Lead at the Centre for Experimental Medicine and Rheumatology, part of Queen Mary University of London's Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry. He also leads the WHRI Work Experience Programme. His research focuses on immune mechanisms, particularly the role of follicular dendritic cells (FDCs) in B cell tolerance and autoimmunity. Key areas include antigen processing by FDCs, T cell-independent immunity, and the molecular pathways driving autoimmune responses.
Research Interests: Dr. El Shikh's work explores how FDCs present self-antigens to B cells in germinal centers, leading to autoreactive B cell activation and autoimmune perpetuation. Recent findings highlight FDC-mediated mechanisms in breaking B cell tolerance to self-antigens like TNF-alpha and IgE, offering potential therapeutic targets for autoimmune diseases.
Collaborators include internal researchers such as Costantino Pitzalis and external partners like John G. Tew and Harvey A. Schenkein. Sponsors include the William Harvey Research Foundation. His work bridges basic immunology with clinical applications, aiming to advance treatments for chronic autoimmune conditions.
