Mohammed Bashir Salau is a Professor of History at the Department of History, College of Liberal Arts, University of Mississippi. He holds a Ph.D. from York University (2005) and has taught at Whitman College prior to joining Ole Miss in 2006.

His research focuses on Northern and West Africa from the 19th-20th centuries, emphasizing Islam, slavery, imperialism, political violence, and African diaspora history. Current work examines convict labor systems in colonial Nigeria.
Publications include monographs on plantation slavery in the Sokoto Caliphate and comparative West African slavery studies, alongside an edited volume on Africa's global historical connections. He teaches undergraduate and graduate courses spanning African history, Islam in Africa, and decolonization.
