Michael A. Gomez is a Silver Professor of History and Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies at New York University. He holds dual appointments in the Department of History and the Department of Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies within the College of Arts & Science. His research focuses on West Africa, the African Diaspora, Islam, and social/cultural transformations. Gomez has authored seminal works like African Dominion (2018) and Black Crescent (2005), and edited Diasporic Africa: A Reader (2006). He founded the Association for the Study of the Worldwide African Diaspora (ASWAD) and served as President of UNESCO's Slave Route Project committee (2009–2011). His work integrates historical analysis with cultural studies, emphasizing identity formation and transnational connections.

Gomez’s research explores themes like African Muslim communities in the Americas, precolonial West African polities, and the global African diaspora.
