Mitsuko Shirai is a Professor of Voice at Karlsruhe University and a celebrated lied singer, specializing in German art song interpretation. She collaborates closely with pianist Hartmut Höll and has held visiting professorships at institutions including Salzburg, Mozarteum, and the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM). Her teaching focuses on song performance and vocal technique.
Education highlights include a Ph.D. honoris causa from the University of Victoria (2018). Her research interests center on the intersection of vocal expression, text, and historical performance practices in classical lieder and opera repertoire.
Awardees include the Emperor of Japan's Purple Ribbon Medal (2008) and Order of the Rising Sun (2018), recognizing her contributions to German lieder. She has also received the Robert Schumann Prize (1982) and serves as a juror at major international competitions like the Hugo Wolf Competition.
