Mitchell Cowan is a Researcher at the University of Western Australia (UWA), affiliated with the UWA School of Agriculture and Environment. His expertise lies in movement ecology, wildlife conservation, and the impacts of environmental disturbances on biodiversity. Dr. Cowan's work focuses on mammals, particularly the endangered northern quoll (Dasyurus hallucatus), with extensive experience in Western Australia's Pilbara region and Kakadu National Park. He collaborates with Traditional Owners and research partners to study biodiversity hotspots and sustainable land management practices, including wet-season burning techniques.
Dr. Cowan holds a BSc (Hons) in Environmental Science and Management (2019) and a PhD in Ecology (2024), both from Charles Sturt University. His research integrates spatial ecology and disturbance ecology to address conservation challenges in mining landscapes and post-fire ecosystems. He has co-authored over 20 peer-reviewed articles, emphasizing camera trap monitoring, functional traits of predators, and the ecological impacts of human activities.
His recent work includes studies on mining-induced ecological changes, semelparous mammal survival strategies, and the behavioral adaptations of endangered marsupials. Dr. Cowan’s contributions align with UN Sustainable Development Goals focused on biodiversity protection and sustainable land use.
